Public Health Specialist
Dr. Mohammed Makame was PATH’s Tanzania Country ProgramLeader since 2009; he was the Regional TB/HIV specialist and TB/HIV ProjectDirector for PATH’s TB and TB/HIV program in Tanzania and also served as theRegional TB/HIV Specialist providing technical guidance and support to PATH’sTB and TB/HIV programs in Kenya and other countries in the eastern Africaregion from 2005 to 2011. He has served as a consultant with WHO and PATH andhas over 24 years of experience in the medical field and over 18 years in publichealth. Dr. Makame is a Tanzanian public health specialist (epidemiologist)with areas of technical expertise that include communicable and noncommunicabledisease epidemiology, disease surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, healthmanagement information systems, public-private partnerships, primary healthcare, health care policy, program management, and health managementteam-building. He also has extensive experience in strategic planning, programevaluation, technical support to area-based programs on health, water andsanitation, health sector reforms, advocacy communication and socialmobilization (ACSM), and capacity building. In addition to his experienceworking with the governments of Tanzania and Zanzibar in programming, Dr.Makame worked in Namibia as Regional Medical Officer for 5 years and alsoserved as a Health and WATSAN advisor to the Irish Embassy in Dar es Salaam for4 years. He graduated as an MD from the University of Dares Salaam and receivedpostgraduate training in epidemiology from the Graduate School of PublicHealth, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has firsthand experience inTB and TB/HIV, PPM in TB, and Community TB engagement and speaks Kiswahili andEnglish fluently.
